Steel base plates are more durable than plastic plates. Plastic base plates can be damaged by the steel detaching mechanism resulting in accidental release. You can detach it from the bike with the pull of a latch and carry it as a suitcase.

The 12 volt led brake light is great for increasing your visibility at night. It comes with a sturdy metal base plate and hardware for attaching it to your luggage rack. New model 929 extra large detachable motorcycle trunk with backrest and 12v brake light.
The only drilling required is 2 holes through the rubber pad. Standard factory rack for dl 650 and dl 1000 shown with one large and one extra large hoc full face helmets the lighting wires have quick disconnect clips for easy removal when detaching the case.

This trunk includes mounting hardware which has been modified to fit the 2004 through 2011 DL650 and DL1000 v storms with the standard rack as shown in the first photo below. The 929 with the plate weighs about 12 lbs so you can carry 10 lbs of cargo within the trunk without exceeding the luggage rack's rating.

TeXes pxzj878 TeXes 19. This is the newest version of the 929 with the improved backrest and the PVC trimmed base plate. The extra height allows larger helmets to fit inside. The only manufacturer's logos are on the base plate and on the inside of the trunk.
At 39 liters, the 929 is a 1/2 taller than most other extra large detachable cases on. The mounting point layout is the same as the monkey system which is rated for a 22 lb payload capacity, but the 929 will not fit give monkey racks or mounting plates because the hole for the latch mechanism is different. 4 extra holes have been drilled in the mounting plate to with the factory holes in the v strom luggage rack.
